A Long-Standing History with the U.S. Armed Forces

For more than six decades, The Culinary Institute of America has been setting the standard for excellence in professional culinary education. Founded in 1946 in New Haven, CT by Frances Roth, a prominent attorney, and Katharine Angell, the wife of Yale President James Angell, the school was created to provide culinary training and careers for returning World War II veterans. As the original culinary institute, the CIA served an unmet need for high quality, professional culinary education and grew rapidly. In 1972, with a student body of 1,000, the college moved to its expansive main campus in Hyde Park, NY, the former Jesuit novitiate St. Andrew-on-Hudson. Today, veterans from all branches of the military enhance our student body and bring much-valued diversity and life experience to campus.

The foodservice and hospitality industry currently employs more than 12 million people and job opportunities in this industry continue to grow. A culinary career is an ideal option for transitioning military personnel and their families to consider for the next stage in their lives. And with a CIA degree, you can enter the foodservice industry with the credential that opens doors.

Welcome Veterans!

Taylor PiconeThank you for your interest in The Culinary Institute of America and for your service in the United States Armed Forces. I am the admissions officer for veterans here at the CIA and I am honored to be serving in a position that allows me to work on behalf of our nation's service members.

The Culinary Institute of America has a history rich with service. Our doors opened in 1946 to train returning WWII veterans utilizing the original G.I. Bill in order to gain the professional skills necessary to be competitive in the food service industry. Over 60 years later our mission remains the same. While our programs and campuses have expanded and improved we are proud to enroll approximately 150 veterans annually between our three U.S. campuses who carry on the traditions of our original veteran students from 1946.

Prior to starting with The Culinary Institute, I attended Valley Forge Military Academy and College where I received my commission into the United States Army. I presently serve in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as the Executive Officer of a Forward Support Company of the 228th Brigade Support Battalion and I am a proud member of the United States Army Transportation Corps. As the CIA Veterans Admissions Officer, I am here to assist you in any way possible. As a service member myself, I am excited and honored to work with and serve our country's veterans. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and service to our great nation.
